Why is data.data undefined when I search the X API?

Almost always because the query matched nothing. X omits the data key entirely on an empty result instead of sending an empty array, so read meta.result_count before you touch data.

On X API v2 an empty result is not an empty array. The response carries a meta object and no data key at all, so any code that reaches straight into the payload throws rather than finding nothing.

Check the count first, and treat its absence as zero:

JAVASCRIPT
const res = await client.v2.search('from:elonmusk doge', { max_results: 10 })

// res.meta is always there. res.data is the RAW page, and X omits its data key
// entirely when nothing matched, so read the count and use res.tweets for the rows.
if (!res.meta?.result_count) {
  console.log('no matches')
} else {
  for (const tweet of res.tweets) console.log(tweet.text)
}

If the query looks right and still matches nothing

  • Recent search only covers the last 7 days on most access levels. A date outside that window returns nothing rather than an error.
  • An operator your access level does not support is dropped silently, so the query that runs is not the query you wrote.
  • A handle that was renamed resolves to nothing under the old name.

XCrop answers an empty search the other way round: data is always an array, and meta carries the count, so the undefined case does not exist. A query that cannot be read at all returns an error status rather than an empty success.
